RESUMO

Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM) was founded in 1933 and the first Professor of Neurology was Fausto Guerner, who could not effectively assume the teaching activities due to his premature death in 1938. Professor Guerner had had his neurological training at Paris. Professor Longo was his successor. Longo was one of the founders of Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria the foremost journal of neurosciences in Latin American. Longo died in 1967 and Professor Paulo Pupo succeeded him. Pupo introduced electroencephalography in Brazil. After his death in 1970, Professor Dante Giorgi succeeded him until 1974. Professor José Geraldo Camargo Lima took over the position after Giorgi’s death. He created the Neurological Emergency unit, initiated the Post-Graduation in Neurology and divided the Discipline in specialized units. During the 1980’s and until his retirement in 1995, EPM had become one of most important centers of Brazil training neurologists and researchers in neurological sciences.


A Escola Paulista de Medicina foi fundada em 1933 e o primeiro Professor de Neurologia foi Fausto Guerner, que morreu prematuramente em 1938, antes do início das aulas. O Professor Paulino Longo foi o seu sucessor. Longo, juntamente com outros, fundou os Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria e a Academia Brasileira de Neurologia. Professor Paulo Pupo, seu sucessor, introduziu a eletroencefalografia no Brasil. O Professor José Geraldo Camargo Lima tornou-se chefe da Neurologia em 1974. Criou o Pronto-Socorro de Neurologia, iniciou a Pós-Graduação e dividiu a disciplina em setores especializadas. A partir dos anos 1980, a Neurologia da EPM tornou-se um dos centros acadêmicos mais importantes do Brasil.

En 31 comensales regulares del Comedor Universitario de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (CUUCV), en Caracas. Se observó el efecto de la sustitución del aceite de girasol que se utiliza corrientemente en la preparación de las comidas en ese comedor, por un aceite obtenido de la mezcla de aceite de girasol y oleína de palma, en la proporción 70/30 (v/v) respectivamente. Después de 40 días continuos de la sustitución no hubo cambios significativos en las concentraciones de colesterol total (CT), ni del colesterol de las lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) y muy baja densidad (VLDL). La concentración del colesterol de las lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) aumentó significativamente (p<0,05). Los triglicéridos (TG) del plasma aumentaron en un 30%. La resistencia a la oxidación de las LDL aumentó considerablemente (p< 0,01). Hoy se considera a esta resistencia como un factor protector de gran importancia en la prevención del inicio del proceso aterogénico. Tomando en cuenta las modificaciones favorables como el aumento de colesterol de HDL sin modificación de la LDL y el claro aumento de la resistencia a la oxidación de la LDL, se considera que la oleína de palma es un aceite vegetal que puede ser utilizado sin mayores riesgos en mezcla con otros aceites que tengan una relación linoleico/palmítico más elevada como los aceites de girasol, maíz, soja y otros.


We analyzed in 31 subjects, regular guests of the University food service of the Central University of Venezuela (UCVFS), in Caracas, the effects of replacing sunflower oil, commonly used in the preparation of meals, by a mix of sunflower oil and palm olein 70/30 (v/v) respectively. Plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, low and very low density lipoproteins were not changed after 40 days of the substitution. On the contrary, concentrations of high density lipoprotein and total triglycerides increased. The resistance to the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins increased considerably (p<0, 01). Today this resistance is considered as a protective factor of great importance in the prevention of the initiation of the atherogenic process. Taking into account the favorable modifications of HDL cholesterol and the clear increased resistance to the oxidation of LDL, we think that palm olein, mixed with other oils with a high ratio linoleic/palmític (sunflower, corn, soya an the likes), can be used as a healthy alternative in human nutrition.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is triggered by a nutritional-metabolic alteration characterized by triacylglicerides acumulation, insulin resistance (IR), oxidative stress and depletion of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). The n-3 PUFA, such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, would be hepatoprotective against the development of NAFLD by stimulating lipolysis and inhibit lipogenesis. So, fish oil supplementation (EPA + DHA) prevents HFDinduced NAFLD. In this context, the aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between liver oxidative stress with IR and levels of PUFA in supplemented mice. Male mice C57BL/6J (n=9) were fed for 12th week: a) control diet (20% protein, 70% carbohydrate, 10% lipids), b) control diet and fish oil supplementation (200 mg EPA+DHA/kg/day), c) high fat diet (20% protein, 20% carbohydrate, 60% lipids), and d) high fat diet and fish oil supplementation. Liver steatosis (histology), insulin resistance (HOMA), liver oxidative stress (GSH/GSSG, carbonyl protein and 8-isoprostanes) and liver fatty acid content were evaluated. The significant decrease in liver oxidative stress parameters (p<0.05, ANOVA followed by Newman Keuls test) were correlated (Pearson test) with HOMA and levels of PUFA, along with the hepatoprotection observed. It concludes that prevention of NAFLD by supplementation with fish oil (EPA+DHA) is dependent of the prevention of liver oxidative stress, IR and PUFA depletion.


La enfermedad por hígado graso no alcohólica (EHGNA) está provocada por una alteración metabólico- nutricional caracterizada por la acumulación de triacilglicéridos, resistencia a la insulina, estrés oxidativo y disminución de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGPI). Los AGPI ω-3, como los ácidos eicosapentaenoico (EPA) y docosahexaenoico (DHA), serían hepatoprotectores contra la EHGNA al estimular la lipolisis e inhibir la lipogénesis hepática. La suplementación con aceite de pescado (EPA + DHA) previene la esteatosis hepática inducida por una dieta alta en grasas. En este contexto, el objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la correlación entre el estrés oxidativo hepático, la resistencia a la insulina y los niveles de AGPI ω-3 en ratones suplementados. Ratones machos C57BL/6J (n=9) alimentados durante 12 semanas con: a) dieta control (20% proteína, 70% hidratos de carbono, 10% lípidos), b) dieta control y suplementación con 200 mg de EPA+DHA/kg/día, c) dieta alta en grasa (20% proteína, 20% hidratos de carbono, 60% lípidos), y d) dieta alta en grasas más EPA+DHA. Se evaluaron la esteatosis hepática (histología), resistencia a la insulina (HOMA), estrés oxidativo hepático (GSH/GSSG, proteínas carboniladas y 8-isoprostanos) y el contenido de ácidos grasos hepáticos. La disminución significativa en los parámetros hepáticos de estrés oxidativo (p <0,05, ANOVA seguido de Newman-Keuls) se correlacionó positivamente (test de Pearson) con el HOMA y los niveles de AGPI ω-3, junto con la hepatoprotección observada. Se concluye que la prevención de EHGNA por suplementación con EPA+DHA, se acompaña de una correlación inversa entre el estrés oxidativo y la resistencia a la insulina y la disminución de AGPI ω-3 hepáticos.

CONTEXT: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by lipid deposits in the hepatocytes and has been associated with obesity, dyslipidemia and type-2 diabetes. It is considered a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, of which the main component is insulin resistance leading to hyperinsulinemia and increased production of inflammatory cytokines. Saturated fat promotes hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia, reduces levels of high-density cholesterol and increases levels of low-density cholesterol, while polyunsaturated fat is associated with hypolipidemic, antiinflammatory and imunoregulating action. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hepatic and biochemical repercussions of a polyunsaturated fat-rich diet in Wistar rats. METHODS: Twenty-two rats were distributed equally in two groups: GI - standard diet (Biobase Bio-tec Ratos e Camundongos®) providing 3.000 kcal/kg and GII - hypercaloric and hyperlipidic diet providing 4.250 kcal/kg (ω-6:ω-3 = 3:1). The animals were euthanized after 23 weeks of experiment. The weight, biochemical parameters and hepatohistological changes were registered. RESULTS: Findings were submitted to variance analysis with the level of statistical significance at 5 percent. The average weight did not differ significantly between the groups at baseline (P = 0.711), but was greater in Group II by the end of the experiment (P = 0.000). The levels of triglycerides (P = 0.039), total cholesterol (P = 0.015) and HDL (P = 0.005) were higher in Group I than in Group II. Macrovesicular steatosis was significantly more common in Group II than in Group I (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Hypercaloric and hyperlipidic diet rich in polyunsaturated fat promotes weight gain and favors the development of hepatic steatosis while reducing serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL.


CONTEXTO: A doença hepática gordurosa não-alcoólica caracteriza-se por depósito de lipídios nos hepatócitos. Desperta grande interesse por sua associação com obesidade, dislipidemias e diabetes mellitus tipo 2. É considerada a manifestação hepática da síndrome metabólica, cujo principal componente é a resistência à insulina, com consequente hiperinsulinemia e produção aumentada de citocinas inflamatórias. Dietas ricas em gorduras saturadas promovem hipertrigliceridemia, diminuição do colesterol de alta densidade, aumento do colesterol de baixa densidade e hiperinsulinemia, enquanto dietas ricas em gordura poliinsaturada podem apresentar efeitos hipolipidêmicos, antiinflamatórios e imunorreguladores. OBJETIVO: Investigar as repercussões hepáticas e bioquímicas da dieta rica em gordura poliinsaturada em ratos Wistar. MÉTODOS: Os animais (22) foram distribuidos nos grupos GI-dieta padrao (Biobase Bio-tec Ratos e Camundongos®) com 3000 kcal/kg e GII-dieta hipercalorica e hiperlipidica, com 4250 kcal/kg, relação ω-6: ω-3 = 3:1. Foram mortos apos 23 semanas de administração das dietas. Avaliaram-se peso, exames bioquimicos e alteracoes histológicas do fígado. RESULTADOS: Foram utilizados testes de análise de variância com nível de significância de 5 por cento (P<0,05). Não houve diferença significante na média de peso entre os grupos (P = 0,711) no início, entretanto GII apresentou maior média que GI ao final do experimento (P = 0,000). GI mostrou níveis significantemente mais elevados de triglicerídeos (P = 0,03), colesterol total (P = 0,039) e HDL (P = 0,015) do que GII. O GII apresentou maior média de esteatose macrovesicular do que GI (P = 0,005). CONCLUSÃO: A dieta hipercalórica e hiperlipídica, rica em gordura poliinsaturada, promove esteatose hepática e incremento de peso, contudo reduz os níveis séricos de triglicerídeos, colesterol total e HDL.

Nosotros comparamos los efectos del consumo de aceite de seje (Oenocarpus bataua), con respecto el de oliva virgen sobre la concentración de los lípidos del plasma y de la susceptibilidad de oxidación in vitro de las lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) en la rata Sprague Dawley. Dos grupos de 10 ratas macho, fueron alimentados ad libitum por un lapso de 8 semanas, con una dieta purificada que contenía 10g aceite de seje u oliva/100 g de dieta (GS y GO respectivamente). Se extrajo la sangre a los animales previo ayuno de 14 horas. El plasma fue aislado por centrifugación, y las fracciones de lipoproteínas se separaron por ajuste de densidad y ultracentrifugaciones sucesivas. Las HDL de ambos grupos fueron oxidadas por incubación con iones cobre. La diferencia de susceptibilidad de oxidación de las HDL fue estudiada midiendo la formación de sustancias reactivas al ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS) a las 3 horas. Las ratas del GO presentaron una disminución estadísticamente significativa en la concentración de los triglicéridosTG (p<0.05) comparada con las ratas del GS. Las HDL del GS experimentaron una disminucion estadisticamente significativa de la susceptibilidad de oxidacion de las HDL respecto las HDL GO. Esto puede ser atribuido a la mas baja concentracion de acidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGPI) en las HDL GS comparado con las HDL del GO.


We compared the effect of the consumption of seje oil (Oenocarpus bataua), with that of olive oil, on plasma lipids and susceptibility in vitro to oxidation of high density lipoprotein (HDL) in the rat. Two groups of ten male Sprague Dawley rats were fed ad libitum, for a lapse of eight week, with a purified diets with 10g de seje oil or olive oil/ 100 g of diet (GS y GO respectively). The animals were exsanguinated at the end of the experimental after a 14 hour fast. This study analyzed the effects of different concentrations of flaxseed oil (FO) on the proximate composition and the contents of alpha-linolenic acid (LNA, 18:3n-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) fatty acids in the liver of cultured Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). During the fivemonth culture period, tilapias were given diets with incremental concentrations of FO (0.00%; 1.25%; 2.50%; 3.75%, and 5.00%) as a replacement of sunflower oil (control). There was no significant difference in moisture and ash content in the liver between treatments. Protein values ranged from 12.1% (treatment II) to 13.9% (treatment V) and total lipids ranged from 5.6% (treatment V) to 7.2% (treatment II). There was no significant difference between most treatments. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were quantitatively analyzed by capillary gas chromatography against a C23:0 internal standard. Variations in concentrations (in mg g-1 of total lipids) of fatty acids between treatment I and treatment V ranged from 4.2 to 51.2 (LNA), from 0.2 to 2.3 (EPA), and from 10.6 to 56.2 (DHA), respectively. This experiment demonstrated that increasing amounts of LNA in feed may markedly increase the amounts of LNA, EPA, and DHA in the liver of Nile tilapia.


Este estudio analiza los efectos de diversas concentraciones del aceite de linaza (AL) en la composición centesimal y el contenido del ácido alfa-linolenico (LNA, 18:3 n-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5 n-3), y (DHA, 22:6 n-3), los ácidos grasos docosahexaenoic en el hígado del tilapia del Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) criada em cautiverio. Durante un período de cinco meses, a las tilapias le fueron administradas dietas con concentraciones crecientes de AL (0,00%; 1,25%; 2,50%; 3,75%, y 5,00%) como reemplazo del aceite de girasol (control). No se encontró diferencia significativa en el contenido de humedad y de ceniza en el hígado entre los tratamientos. Los valores de la proteina variaron entre 12,1% (tratamiento II) y (al tratamiento 13,9% V) y los lípidos totales entre el 5,6% (tratamiento V) y 7,2% (tratamiento II). No se encontró diferencia significativa entre la mayoría de los tratamientos. Los ésteres metílicos de los ácidos grasos (FAMEs) fueron analizados cuantitativamente por cromatografía de gas capilar contra la CA. 23:0 estándares internos. Las variaciones en concentraciones (en mg g-1 de lípidos totales) de ácidos grasos entre el tratamiento I y el tratamiento V variaron entre 4,2 y 51,2 (LNA), 0,2 y 2,3 (EPA), y 10,6 a 56,2 (DHA), respectivamente. Esto experimento demostró que cantidades crecientes de LNA en la alimentación puede aumentar significativamente las cantidades de LNA, de EPA, y de DHA en el hígado de la tilapia del Nilo.

RESUMO

The administration of galactosamine in omega-3 polyunsatu-rated fatty acid (PUFA) supplemented mice resulted in lesser amount of damage in the liver tissue compared to the mice without prior supplementation of fish oil. Only 50% elevation in the plasma total bilirubin was detected in omega-3 supplemented mice injected with galactosamine over those supplemented with omega-3 without galactosomine injection. The results suggest that very long chain omega-3 PUFA like eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid may act as preventive agent for hepatic cirrhosis in Mus musculus.

Se investigó la susceptibilidad a la oxidación in vitro de las HDLs de conejos por acción del Cu2+. Los conejos fueron alimentados durante 3 meses con un suplemento de 10 de aceite crudo de palma o de maíz. Las HDLs aisladas por ultracentrifugación y dializadas se oxidaron con 10 µM de Cu2+, la generación de dienos conjugados se midió mediante análisis espectroscópico a 234 nm. La fase de retardo del grupo alimentado con aceite crudo de palma fue de 145 min con respecto a 94 min del grupo que recibió aceite de maíz (p< 0.05 por ciento). Se concluye que la ingesta de aceite de palma rico en carotenos y tocoferoles incrementó la protección contra las oxidaciones in vitro, de los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados de la HDL.

Supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in infancy improves neuro-developmental outcomes, but there is limited information about the impact of supplementing pregnant mothers with DHA on the development of their infants. In a follow-up of a randomized, double-blind controlled trial with 400 pregnant mothers, the effects of supplementation of fish-oil or soy-oil (4 g/day) during the last trimester of pregnancy on psychomotor development and behaviour of infants at 10 months of age (n=249) were assessed. The quality of psychosocial stimulation at home (HOME) and nutritional status of the subjects were also measured. There were no significant differences in the fish-oil group and soy-oil group in any of the developmental (mean +/-SD mental development index: 102.5 +/- 8.0 vs. 101.5 +/- 7.8, psychomotor development index: 101.7 +/- 10.0 vs. 100.5 +/- 10.1) or behavioural outcomes. It may, therefore, be concluded that supplementation of fish-oil during the last trimester of pregnancy does not have any added benefit over supplementation of soy-oil on the development or behaviour of infants in this population.

RESUMO

Effect of a computed diet based on cereals and spices incorporated with either crude palm oil (CPO)/soybean oil (SBO)/cod liver oil (CLO) at 10% level in the diet in modulating iron-induced in vivo lipid peroxidation was carried out during a 12 week study in albino rats. Three groups of rats, each divided into three sets were fed diets based on casein/ragi/jowar incorporated with CPO or SBO or CLO. The casein group of rats did not receive any spice mixture, while the ragi and jowar groups received spice mixture at 2.5% level. Serum lipid analysis showed significant increase in cholesterol, LDL-c + VLDL-c and decrease in HDL-c levels in all the iron treated group of animals. In liver, non-significant increase in total cholesterol triglyceride and decrease in phospholipid levels were noted. Fatty acid profile of liver tissue exhibited low 18:2 levels in various experimental groups due to peroxidation of membrane lipids. Histopathological examination of liver tissue in particular showed mild cytoplasmic vacuolation in control group of rats fed ragi/jowar and moderate vacuolation in all the iron-treated groups. The results demonstrate that different dietary components can beneficially modulate free radical mediated oxidative stress induced by lipid peroxidation.

Carbon-chain length and degree of saturation of dietary fat may influence weight gain. To examine this hypothesis we randomly allotted 100 male, 30-day old, albino rats to each of four groups. Each group was fed, ad libitum, a diet containing, as the only source of fat, either lard (L) or safflower oil (SO) (representing saturated and polyunsaturated fat respectively) or groundnut oil (GO) or coconut oil (CO) (representing long-chain and medium-chain triglycerides respectively). At the end of 90 days it was found that rats fed SO consumed more food than those fed L enriched diet (P < 0.001) but the weight gain was similar in the two groups. Similarly rats fed GO-containing diet ate more than those fed diet containing CO (P < 0.001), yet weight gain was similar. Thus it appears that carbon-chain length and degree of saturation of dietary fat does not influence weight gain in rats fed an ad libitum diet.

Feeding of 2% cholesterol diet increased lipid parameters in serum and tissues of rats during a period of one month. In addition to the above, lipid peroxidation also increased and activities of certain enzymes were significantly altered in the tissues. Similar changes were also observed to a greater extent with diets containing 40% by weight of coconut kernel or groundnut with and without 2% cholesterol. The enzymes studied were HMGCoA reductase, AST, ALT and ALP in tissues and serum as the case may be. In general the atherogenic effects were observed more with groundnut containing diets than those with coconut. Even though the oil from the former is mostly unsaturated and that from the latter is mostly saturated, these analytical criteria do not relate to their atherogenic effects. When 5% garlic was incorporated with any of the high fat diets, the lipid parameters, their peroxidation and alterations in enzyme activities were significantly decreased. These results show that garlic contains some principles that counteract the atherogenicity of the above oil seeds.

The effect of rotifers, Brachionus rotundiformis (S-type), fed three different diets: A (rotifer fed Nannochloropsis oculata), B (rotifer fed N. oculata and baker's yeast, 1:1), and C (rotifer fed N. oculata and baker's yeast, 1:1, and enriched with Selcoâ), was evaluated based on the survival, growth and swim bladder inflation rate of fat snook larvae. Rotifers of treatment A had higher levels (4.58 mg/g dry weight) of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) than B (1.81 mg/g dry weight), and similar levels (0.04 and 0.06 mg/g dry weight, respectively) of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Rotifers of treatment C had the highest levels of EPA (13.2 mg/g dry weight) and DHA (6.08 mg/g dry weight). Fat snook eggs were obtained by spawning induction with human chorionic gonadotropin. Thirty hours after hatching, 30 larvae/liter were stocked in black cylindric-conical tanks (36-liter capacity). After 14 days of culture, there were no significant differences among treatments. Mean standard length was 3.13 mm for treatment A, 3.17 mm for B, and 3.39 mm for C. Mean survival rates were very low (2.7 percent for treatment A, 2.3 percent for B, and 1.8 percent for C). Swim bladder inflation rates were 34.7 percent for treatment A, 27.1 percent for B, and 11.9 percent for C. The lack of differences in growth and survival among treatments showed that the improvement of the dietary value of rotifer may not have been sufficient to solve the problem of larval rearing. Some other factor, probably pertaining to the quality of the larvae, may have negatively influenced survival

RESUMO

Long term feeding effect of thermally oxidised oils on activities of hepatic antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) at 5 and 20% level for 20 weeks was studied in laboratory rats. Activity of catalase increased in heated and fried oil fed group of rats, whereas activities of GPX, GST and SOD decreased in both heated and fried oil groups. Increase or decrease in activities of these enzymes may be related to several factors like heating and frying conditions, nature of fat, extent of peroxidation, presence of antioxidants, duration of feeding, beside other factors.

RESUMO

To study the growth response of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to the diets containing two protein (30 and 35%) and two lipid levels (12 and 18%) in a closed recirculatory system for 60 days, fish were fed to satiation twice daily. The experiment was carried out in triplicate groups. Fortnightly sampling of fish and water samples was carried out. The best result in terms of growth was obtained with the diet containing 34.62% protein and 12.12% lipid. The protein to lipid ratio was 18.57 in the diet that gave best percentage weight gain. However best survival, food conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were recorded in the diet containing 29.86% protein and 18.08% lipid.

RESUMO

Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo comparar el aceite de cártamo con el aceite de palma africana (Elaeis guineensi) como fuente de energía en dietas para pollos de engorda. Se empleó un diseño completamente al azar, cada tratamiento fue triplicado a 30 pollitos mixtos de engorda de la línea comercial Arbor Acres, de 1 a 49 días de edad. Los pollos fueron alojados en 15 corrales con cama de viruta de madera y piso de cemento divididos por un pasillo central. Los pollos fueron alimentados con dietas a base de sorgo y pasta de soya, a las que se agregaron aceite de palma o aceite de cártamo a diferentes niveles de inclusión. Las dietas se formularon considerando 2 etapas en el cilo productivo del pollo: iniciación (0 a 3 semanas de edad) y finalización (3 a 7 semanas de edad). Los tratamientos experimentales consistieron en incluir aceite de palma africana (2.5 por ciento y 5 por ciento) o aceite de cártamo bajo las mismas condiciones a una dieta a base de sorgo y pasta de soya basal con 0 por ciento de aceite. Los resultado promedio obtenidos a los 21 días de edad indicaron que no existió diferencia estadística (P > 0.05) entre los aceites utilizados en el experimento. Los resultados promedio obtenido a 49 días de edad también fueron similares (P > 0.05) entre tratamientos para las variables ganancias de peso (2251 g y 2232 g), consumo de alimento (4854 g y 4742 g) y pigmentación de la canal (52.2 y 54.3 valor de amarillamiento). Sin embargo, existió diferencia (P < 0.05) para las variables conversión alimenticia (2.18 y 2.15) y eficiencia alimenticia (0.464 y 0.471) en favor del aceite de cártamo, respecto del aceite de palma. Mediante la comparación de pendientes considerando los datos de eficiencia a los 21 y 49 días de edad, se encontró un valor energético del 81.9 por ciento y 82.8 por ciento, respectivamente, en relación con el aceite de cártamo (100 por ciento), lo que representa un valor de E.M. de 7,330 Kcal/kg para aves hasta los 21 días de edad y de 7,410 Kcal/kg para aves hasta los 49 días de edad

Antitumor effects of pre-transplantation hyperthermia and its correlation to immunological changes in the host animals and enhancement by dietary unsaturated fat have been studied. Leg muscles of mice were locally heated (41 degrees-43 degrees C, 40 min) and fibrosarcoma cells were inoculated into the heated and unheated sites and tumor growth time was determined. Spleen cell activity and plasma levels of interleukins (IL1 and 2) [RIA kits] were assessed. Muscle and tumor fatty acid profiles were modified by feeding mice with unsaturated fat supplemented diet and analysed by GLC. Pre-transplantation hyperthermia suppressed the tumor growth on both heated and unheated contralateral legs of mice. These effects were associated with increased spleen cell activity and plasma levels of IL1 and 2. Diet rich in unsaturated fat altered the fatty acid profiles of the leg muscles and tumors and inhibited tumor growth. It also potentiated the antitumor effect of pre-transplantation hyperthermia. In conclusion, mild local hyperthermia induces both direct and abscopal antitumor effects which may be ascribed to stimulation of host's antitumor immune responses and these effects are augmented by unsaturated fat supplemented diet.
